I owned a Savage Mark I Youth model accidentally, but then I began competing in rimfire benchrest competitions. I recently purchased another Mark II. In later years, we purchased many more! Savage has a website that is difficult to use when comparing rifles unless you use it in a very particular way, so I would like to save you a few hours of research by sharing what my thoughts are.
Much comes down to personal preference, and mine is for a specific purpose. If you want an accurate bolt action magazine fed. My first way to narrow down the huge list of models is to insist upon a heavy barrel.
Those purchasing a. Next, I considered barrel length. We generally believe that we want longer barrels to improve accuracy, right? The primary reason longer barrels have better performance is that they allow all of the powder to burn, thus creating more thrust of the bullet. With a. This means that you are left with 7 options. All have the same actions, and all have the acutrigger, which is great for those that do not compete professionally.
I will list them in my order of price, from high to low. The SRR version has side rails as well. It comes with peep sights which is a waste if you do not plan to use them. I say get the FV and put your own scope on.
Minor gap will be visible on rear of stock with older pre-accutrigger actions. Older receivers are about 4 inches longer and will need to be fit. Variations in action mounting screw pillars exist between models.
Do not over tighten. All plastic stocks, and some laminate and hardwood stocks will require you to purchase a different trigger guard and floor plate. These can be purchased on our Accessories page, located at the bottom left hand corner under Products. Some stocks may also require different action screws which are available through DiProductsInc : PN I Accept I Decline.

Thank you for your patience. Starting Price. Your Price.Personal — I have posted in the past about how the lowly. Because I was never happy with the accuracy of the semi-auto rifles I got rid of all but two and replaced them with bolt action rifles two of them you see above. I habitually and continually end up with the bolt action.
Even with the recent and mostly successful try with the Marlin autoloading. Function — Mongo grab bolt, Mongo turn bolt, Mongo pull trigger with bugger hook, fire stick go BOOM there is something elegant in the simple function of the bolt action rifles. The rifles come with the plastic stocks shown, but the colors we added later. This Savage. Quality — Top notch high quality fluted barrel, the magazine release is a bit cheesy as is the cheep plastic stock. We were forced to use sand paper an a big dowel to sand out the barrel channel in the cheep stock to get a reliable free-float.
The magazine is made of steel and is of high quality and as described works great. Of course bulk-box. If you choose target grade ammunition try out several types, speed, weight and brand for accuracy that is often hard to believe. High velocity. Your browser does not support the video tag.I like rimfire rifles a lot. They are cheap to shoot both in terms of time and money. They are indestructible: a rimfire barrel has a life time of rounds, whereas a centerfire barrel is gone after a few thousand shots.
They afford an opportunity to learn essential shooting skills on a small field, because the effect of wind and gravity on a rimfire round at yards is about the same as on a centerfire round at yards. Savages are also my favorite centerfire guns, because they are the most accurate serially produced rifles. Sure, you can make a Remington shoot really, really well - and in fact a number of benchrest class guns are based on Remington action.
But that requires a lot of aftermarket gunsmithing: bedding the stock, truing the action, replacing the barrel and the trigger.

Out of the box, however Savage leaves the competition in the dust. But until recently I have never owned a rimfire rifle from Savage.
They do not make ones for competition no one in US doesand frankly I was simply not sure if I will ever be able to love a plinker. First was the aforementioned accuracy of Savage centerfires - I expected well above average performance from their rimfires as well.
BSEV's street price is almost 2. The above are probably also the reasons why I had to wait for over 4 months before I got my hands on a shipment of MKII-FVs and yes, we now have them in stock! I started with putting a Bushnell x44 scope on it using Burris Signature Zee rings and shot it some from the rest. Then I thought some more, and decided that a plinker must be shot from a bipod. So I mounted a Harris bipod. The result turned out to be nicely light, compact and surprisingly comfortable to wield at only slightly over 8 lb.
Then I shot it some more. Then more, and more, and more. All these targets are at yards, the bulls eyes are 3". Lapua Center-X and Wolf were the rifle's favorite, each producing the 5 shot groups of 1.
More expensive brands of Lapua actually fared worse: Polar Biathlon at 1. Fast ammo did not do well at all - CCI Velocitor and Stinger both had flatter trajectories but produced groups in excess of 3".
The worst performers were Armscor and Aguila with 5" groups. So overall, while not a competition gun, it has its uses. First, no soda can can be safe within yards even with very inexpensive ammunition.Savage Mark II FV .22 lr and OTW Rifle Scope Out Shoots Bergara HMR
Second, because it is so light and nicely balanced, shooting it off-hand is actually easier than a Kimber or a Remington 40x. Finally, it is a nice gun to learn shooting with - unlike the benchrest guns, the hold actually matters - I knew whether the group I am shooting would be good in advance because there was a direct correlation between my hold and the group sizes.
Also, in many cases, it will not obstruct usage of factory iron sights. Our one-piece scope mounts are the obvious choice for hunters and tactical shooters alike. We machine these in our shop using one of our machining centers. After machining, the mounts are tumbled, sand blasted, and Type II anodized for long lasting durability. Installation: We recommend 20 inch lbs of torque and a drip of blue loctite loctite is available through our website and is sold separately.
We recommend: 0 MOA - if shooting yards 20 MOA - if shooting yards The entire mount and accessories from the mounting screws and wrench down to the packaging are made in the USA. Submit Review. Add to Compare. Product Categories.United States - AmmoLand. No other rifle can lay down the accuracy of a quality 22 at short range. Recoil, noise and a host of equipment errors can be isolated to the point where if something is proving to be wrong that it must be with the shooter. We found this missing in our own lineup.
Sure, we had semiauto rifles, target pistols, revolvers and even a conversion kit for our machine gun in 22 lr, but somehow over the years we neglected to acquire a good rimfire bolt action.
SAVAGE ARMS MARK II FV
This was remedied by a trip to our local Cabela's during a weekend sale around the first of the year. In keeping with our other bolt action rifles we knew that we wanted the following:. It seems that most gun writers are accused of getting our firearms for free.
We often wish that was the case and it happens once in a blue moon. More often we are offered a discount on a particular firearm, but unless it is an extremely deep discount or a piece we cannot live without, these guns typically go back to the manufacturer well shot and slightly worse for wear.
When writing for Ammoland, many of these end up as gun giveaways to lucky readers who check their email on a regular basis and enter the giveaway. However, this test gun, like many of the firearms we review here and elsewhere is from our own personal collection.
We mounted a Barska Riflescope with an illuminated reticle that came off a used rifle we had purchased a few years back, a Harris Bipod and a black Super Sling we had laying around.
We like it when we can just plug and play accessories instead of ordering adapters for the simpler things. The rifle is equipped with Savage's amazing accu-trigger. When Savage bellied up to the bar to include a factory trigger worthy of a true rifleman, we rejoiced and have been touting their success ever since. The rifle included a number of accessories from an extra stout thread protector that lined up with the contour of the heavy barrel and came off extremely easy.
We mounted a sound suppressor to the barrel and will cover that later in the article. It is safe to say that it works extremely well on this platform. Our only gripe about the rifle was the magazine release. It resembles a bent piece of thick wire and seems as if it could be fragile or possibly prone to breakage.
We may be looking at a similar model in 22 Magnum or 17 HMR in the near future. The matte black finish and the lines of the rifle remind us very much like a scaled down version of our M40A3.
